PUWER Reg 6
Regulation 6 covers the general rack inspections requirements. The employer must ensure that, where the safety of work equipment depends on the installation conditions, it is inspected by a competent person to ensure that it has been installed correctly and is safe to operate.
PUWER Reg 5
Regulation 5 requires the equipment to be maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order, and in good repair. Where any machinery has a maintenance log, that log is to keep such a log, but the guidance to the Regulations recommends that one be kept in respect of high risk equipment.
PUWER Reg 7, 8 & 9
Specific risks are dealt with by Regulation 7, which restricts use of equipment likely to involve a specific risk to health and safety to those persons given the task of using it. Where maintenance or repairs have to be done, this work is restricted to those who have been specifically designated to do it, having received adequate training for the work.
User and supervisors of work equipment must have available to them adequate health and safety information and, where appropriate, specific written instructions pertaining to the use of the equipment (Regulation 8). User and supervisor training, including, including work methods, risk and precautions, are covered in Regulation 9. Some specific training which is referred to in the ACoP includes young persons, and operators of self-propelled work equipment and chainsaws.
